Ace Ventura: Pet Detective makes Carrey a star

Jim Carrey has made some minor appearances on movies and a regular as Fire Marshall Bill on In Living Color on TV, but nothing can compare to this, Jim Carrey's first starring role. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is hilarious. You can't help but laugh at some of Carrey's completely stupid facial expressions and body language. The only problem with this movie is that it is completely... stupid. The thing is is that I don't think that will matter to audiences. Carrey has gained a fan club with his small roles and with this, he'll shoot up with the big time stars.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective opens with a hilarious scene that kicks the movie off with a bang. It shows Ace Ventura walking down the street carrying a UPS box and kicking it around. As he arrives at the apartment where he is supposed to deliver the box, he is greeted by a man with a dog. The dog is the main reason Ventura has come to the apartment. The dog was taken from the ex-wife and she wanted it back, hence Pet Detective.

Words can not do this movie enough justice. You can not put a facial expression in writing. That's the funniest thing about this movie: Carrey's expressions. There isn't a moment when he isn't doing something crazy with his "rubber" face. One of my favorite parts is when he is walking casually through a ballroom with a string quartet playing. If you look closely, you will see that he pulls on the arm of the cellist. It is a very funny moment to me, because I play the cello.

I only found a couple problems with this movie: no plot and it is really stupid. The only thing that this movie is is a vehicle for Carrey's face. It has a ridiculous plot (he has to find a dolphin or the Dolphins won't be able to play) and nothing really makes sense. This movie spoofs other movies, such as The Crying Game and other really good movies. When it does make fun of these movies, that's when the movie is at its worst. I just wish that Carrey's first starring role could have been in a better movie.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is rated PG-13 and for good cause. There is a lot of language that might be offensive to some people, there is a brief nudity scene of Carrey, and some comic violence. Also, there is a short sex scene, which I care not to put in this review. It is a very offensive movie, but funny nonetheless.
